Zeke (:

Hello, I'm Zeke, and welcome to the Zeke Podcast. Let's talk, Pennsylvania. The guest I have today was born and raised in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, and has a deep understanding of both her community and the political landscape affecting it. She's a registered nurse, union leader, and now running to flip a state Senate seat blue this November third. Thank you so much for being here, Sue Mulvey.

I’m Zeke, a doctor, a Pennsylvanian and unapologetic supporter of Democratic values. You might have seen me on social media working my ass off for Democrats and meeting some pretty amazing people along the way - like President Barack Obama and Governor Josh Shapiro.

For years, I’ve knocked thousands of doors all over Pennsylvania and poured my heart and soul into supporting candidates and causes that make a difference—from local school board races to national elections. The personal is political, and I take every election in Pennsylvania personally.

Where the mainstream media has failed you, I will give you truth and independence. You’ll hear from Democratic leaders, candidates, and change-makers who are working to improve the health of the Commonwealth, and it won’t be boring as hell.

No matter where you are, I’ll meet you with hope and a plan to make your community better one day at a time. Welcome to the Zekely Podcast. Let’s talk Pennsylvania.

Sue Mulvey (:

How are you?

Zeke (:

my I'm very excited you're here. I mean, Sue, the trifecta is within our grasp this year and you are potentially gonna get us over the line.

Sue Mulvey (:

So it's time to make a little history. No dem's ever sat in this seat, but I think we're ready.

Zeke (:

I am so ready. And I'm ex I'm particularly interested in you because you remind me of Katie Muth I've heard a lot about you. And you're and

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah.

Zeke (:

I've just heard that you've got this je ne sais quoi about yourself. You don't take any shit, and you are very passionate about helping people. And and when I interviewed Katie Muth she was the exact same way.

we need more people like you in the state Senate.

Sue Mulvey (:

well, I'm working really hard. We are knocking doors and we are making phone calls, writing postcards, doing all that craziness to get my name out. that's the biggest deal right now is you know, the PA50 is huge and there's teeny tiny little corners everywhere that you know does doesn't have a lot of Wi Fi capability and doesn't have a lot of people online. So, like getting to those people is really hard. And I'm running against the 30 year incumbent. She's been in

one public office or another since nineteen ninety-six.

it's been a whirlwind,

and we're working hard.

Zeke (:

I know. Well this is gonna be my contribution to your campaign. Okay, so we're gonna

Sue Mulvey (:

thank you.

Zeke (:

we're gonna play some games, have some fun, learn all about you. You ready?

Sue Mulvey (:

Okay.

Zeke (:

All right, so you were born and raised in Canneaut Lake. Am saying is it Canneaut

Am I saying it correctly? Okay, so you were born and raised, which is a very small

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah, Kanye Lake. Yeah. Yeah.

Zeke (:

borough in Crawford County, located on the southwestern shore of PA's largest natural glacial lake. It sounds lovely.

Sue Mulvey (:

It is. It's a teeny tiny little lake. we used to swim across it in the summer and walk across it in the winter. So

Zeke (:

Okay.

Sue Mulvey (:

lots of fun. Sometimes we drove across it, but don't tell my mom that because that's something that she wouldn't want to know. Yeah. That's

Zeke (:

I am never. That's amazing. Okay.

Sue Mulvey (:

something she wouldn't want to know. I wouldn't want to tell her, but yeah. We had a lot of fun up there and there was nothing like being a local and you

Zeke (:

Mm-hmm.

Sue Mulvey (:

know, having having that lake to yourself in the winter was just some really, really special moments.

Zeke (:

I was in Erie, Pennsylvania for medical school. And so I might have driven through it at some point to get down to Pittsburgh. I I don't I probably did,

Sue Mulvey (:

Did you go to Lee Con?

Zeke (:

I'll have stop

by

I went to Lecom, yeah.

Sue Mulvey (:

okay, yeah.

Zeke (:

I did.

Sue Mulvey (:

Absolutely. Then you probably I don't know if you're over there, but if you're on 79, you drove at least around it.

Zeke (:

Well, someday I'm gonna have

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah.

Zeke (:

stop by. You definitely are selling it a hundred percent.

we're gonna play a game called Born in a Small Town. Okay, some trivia, all right? so you're gonna you're

Sue Mulvey (:

Okay. Okay.

Zeke (:

gonna guess these people and they're all Pennsylvanians, all right? So not

Sue Mulvey (:

Okay.

Zeke (:

to be confused with a teenage witch, this global pop superstar was born in East Greenville Borough, a small square mile borough in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

Sue Mulvey (:

Not a clue. Sub somebody Sabrina? I don't know.

Zeke (:

Yeah,

yeah. Sabrina Carpenter. Sabrina Carpenter. Yeah.

Sue Mulvey (:

really? Okay, so d

that's not fair. She's she's she's a she's a very young superstar. I y I'm old, remember. Yeah. Okay.

Zeke (:

Yes. That's okay. It's okay. Well,

I'll I'll give you some older ones, okay? All right, so

Sue Mulvey (:

Okay.

Zeke (:

this acad this Academy Award nominated Batman and Beetlejuice actor was born in Beaver Borough, Pennsylvania.

Sue Mulvey (:

Michael Keaton.

Zeke (:

Michael Keaton, very good, yes. okay, this actor who looked for clues on a Nickelodeon show with this dog was born in Boyertownboro, Pennsylvania.

Sue Mulvey (:

Bluesclooth? the what was his

Zeke (:

Yeah, yeah. Do you remember you know his name?

Sue Mulvey (:

name? I don't. I remember Steve. Yes. Yeah.

Zeke (:

it was Steve Burns. Yeah. Steve Burns.

I know. All the good ones are from Pennsylvania. Here's the last one.

Sue Mulvey (:

I'm telling you. It's true.

Zeke (:

It is true. This Oscar nominated actor and director who shot to superstardom in the hangover was born in Jenkintown Borough.

in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

Sue Mulvey (:

yeah, dunno, who's that? Serious

Zeke (:

Bradley Cooper.

Sue Mulvey (:

Really? I did

Zeke (:

Yeah, Bradley Cooper. I mean

and he's huge. He's huge for like Pennsylvania. You know, he loves coming back for games and everything. He's he's really good. So yeah, I mean lot

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah. Yeah, did not know that.

Zeke (:

a lot of great people grew up in small towns in Pennsylvania. Okay, Sue? So, you know, stay there. You you're gonna blow up in the state senate, I can feel it.

Sue, Republican politicians in Pennsylvania have been trying to defund public schools for the past 30 years. What will you do in Harrisburg

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah.

Zeke (:

to help ensure public schools in the Commonwealth get the funding they need?

Sue Mulvey (:

public education is a right in Pennsylvania. It's a right that every single one of our children gets a free and fair and adequate education. so we really have to mind our constitution. and when you look at charter schools and especially the cyber charter schools, you know, they really don't meet up with the brick and mortar public schools that we have, especially if you're looking at test scores and what is happening at those charter schools.

I'm all for funding the very best education for our children, period. Whether it is a charter or whether it is your regular public school. But when it comes to testing, it's the public schools that rock those tests way more than the

Zeke (:

Yeah.

Sue Mulvey (:

charter schools do. And we have to be responsible to Pennsylvania to create adults. We're not raising children, we're raising human beings, we're raising adults. And they have to be able to go out and make their way in the world. And if they can't do that, then we've failed them.

So I would really make sure that we have adequate funding for every single school, especially public schools in Pennsylvania, and charter schools would have to be looked at with a fine-tooth comb because they really, really need to be to be up to standard.

Zeke (:

I agree. I mean, there really is not a lot of regulation when it comes to charter schools in Pennsylvania, unfortunately. That's just the way that they are designed. there needs

Sue Mulvey (:

Right. Right.

Zeke (:

to be more legislation passed so that we can have, you know, d do a fine-tooth comb for those types of organizations, but we're not gonna be able to do that without the trifecta. We cannot fully

Sue Mulvey (:

Exactly.

Zeke (:

fund public schools without the trifecta. You're running for the state senate. 30 years

Sue Mulvey (:

Yes.

Zeke (:

plus, we have not had the majority as Democrats, and this is gonna be our year. And I'm glad that you will focus

Sue Mulvey (:

Right. I hope so.

Zeke (:

on public schools. No, I don't.

I mean hope is everything, but I I really wanna see it happen. I was I was eleven years

Sue Mulvey (:

I hope so. Yeah. I do too.

Zeke (:

old. Eleven years old the last time we had the trifecta in Pennsylvania and I want it now.

Sue, you must have some crazy stories about being a high school nurse. I can you share can you share one of them? Just one.

Sue Mulvey (:

Crazy stories? I don't know.

Zeke (:

Any crazy stories.

Yeah, you've gotta have somebody come into your office with just something wild.

Sue Mulvey (:

well we have a list about things that kids want and that we add to it every day.

Like, can you do a

Zeke (:

yeah, please, please do tell.

Sue Mulvey (:

can you do a strap test? Can you x-ray this? Do you have my contacts? Do you have my rubber bands for braces? Do you have do you think you have my glass lenses? Do you have my lenses?

you know, do you have shoelaces and hair ties and bobby pins?

And all kinds of things like that.

Zeke (:

don't just have like a a

Sue Mulvey (:

know? So that's

Zeke (:

a room in the back where you have cabinets of everything that people need. You don't have that now.

Sue Mulvey (:

Every

single thing. Yeah. I can mix you up. I'll reconstitute you some mitmoxicillin here right for now. No problem. Do you need an IV? Like, sure, we can do that too. Do you know? It's it's

Zeke (:

my god, that's amazing.

Sue Mulvey (:

funny, but it's it's crazy. I've really increased what my office does have because we do have hair ties and bobby pins and safety pins and deodorant and toothpaste and toothbrushes and most things you can find in my office. I have to tell you. It's it's true. But

Zeke (:

Well, I

feel like someday, you know, if you ever want to start a TikTok account or something, I always enjoy watching accounts where you have teachers who write down things that their students say to them in class and you need to take out a marker and then cross it off as they read it and it's hilarious. So I feel like you

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah.

Zeke (:

as a school nurse say, Today, these are the things that students came to ask me for. You just go through the list. I feel like that would garner some followers. So just think about that, okay?

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah. Yeah.

Zeke Tayler (:

Hey, thank you so much for listening to this episode of The Zekely Podcast. And if you're enjoying yourself, please take a moment to rate my Podcast. Five stars would be great and leave a comment as well. And if you're watching this on YouTube, please hit follow. OK, back to the show.

Zeke (:

Sue, when children were lacking winter coats or coming into school with burns, you took it upon yourself to form a committee to study the problems and look for a solution. Have you ever gotten pushback when presenting the data you collect to those who have the power to enact positive change?

Sue Mulvey (:

believe it or not, I haven't.

Zeke (:

Good.

Sue Mulvey (:

a lot of times, you know, because p banks and things in our area, they like to give, they like to see results. So when I went to them and said, This is my plan, this is what I want to do, they basically said, We can give you 10,000, we can give you 15,000, but you you know, keep your

Zeke (:

Mm-hmm.

Sue Mulvey (:

accounts here at like Marquette. Because Marquette was the biggest donor to the WINS project. And they they backed us wholeheartedly.

Zeke (:

And explain explain

Sue Mulvey (:

No, and

Zeke (:

the wins so the WINS project just explained that that that feeds children every weekend during the school year.

Sue Mulvey (:

It was weekend it

was weekend yeah. It was I'm sorry, it was weekend nutrition for students and we

Zeke (:

Mm-hmm.

Sue Mulvey (:

so what had happened was everyone knew that kids were coming to school hungry on Monday, but then kids started coming in like with burns from like spilled boiling water, spilled bacon grease, whatever. And then I I didn't want to debate the problem, right? The problem is childhood hunger and childhood prov poverty. I can't fix that. I you know, I can't fix that in a meeting a week for a couple months, but I can feed kids.

And I can get food into kids' hands that can keep them sustained over the weekend that they don't have to boil water or or fried bacon grease, right? So myself and like three other teachers came together and we just believe it or not, we went on Google how to start a backpack program. And the Colorado Department of Health has a step-by-step guide. So helpful. So we,

Zeke (:

Mm. That's amazing.

Sue Mulvey (:

yeah, it really was. So we basically just wrote down the list.

And I said, we're not starting this until we can pay for a whole year up front. So I wanted $50,000 in the bank before we even started. But got talked into starting it when we had about $18,000 in the bank and

Zeke (:

Mm-hmm.

Sue Mulvey (:

you know, a hope and a prayer. And I ran it for 10 years, left it with a hundred thousand dollar CD, and we were doing a thirty-five thousand dollar a year annual budget, feeding about five hundred kids a year, five hundred kids every weekend during the school year.

ch things that they could cook on their own that would lessen the risk of them getting getting hurt. And it's just it was a great, great program and it's still going today. I think it's being I moved up to the high school so I couldn't have hands on anymore.

he backpack. It was Christmas:Zeke (:

Mm-hmm.

Sue Mulvey (:

Is this all mine? Is it all mine or do I have to share it? And I said, Nope, baby, it's all yours.

Zeke (:

My God.

Sue Mulvey (:

but you know, there was a bill before before Josh Shapiro paid for breakfast and lunch. There was a bill in the in the going through legislature and it got voted down.

And we had the money. And it was $80 million

Zeke (:

Yes.

Sue Mulvey (:

to pay off every single school lunch debt or school cafeteria debt so kids wouldn't get embarrassed at lunch with like a peanut butter sandwich and applesauce and water.

Zeke (:

Yeah.

Sue Mulvey (:

And they voted it down. And we had the money. It didn't come from the rainy. It was excess money that we had. And that was a win-win. That was a win for the people providing

Zeke (:

Yeah.

Sue Mulvey (:

the lunches. It was a win for school districts. It was a win for kids. And they said no. And I'm like, you know what? You're the people at

You're the people that won't go help in the concession stand so your kid can play the sport, right? Like you're that that just kills me.

Zeke (:

It's the Republicans who are holding that back. And so I'm just grateful

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah.

Zeke (:

to know that there are people like you who exist in Pennsylvania and God, we need to get you in the state senate as soon as possible.

Sue, you enjoy fling golf, which I had to look up be because

Sue Mulvey (:

I do.

Zeke (:

I've never heard of it. Okay, and to be fair,

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah.

Zeke (:

I've never played a full round of traditional golf in my life. I'm more of a miniature golf guy. but I want to

Sue Mulvey (:

That's great.

Zeke (:

know how did you get into fling golf?

Sue Mulvey (:

So my son is a professional fling golf player. He's one of the top players in the country. A couple years ago,

Zeke (:

Okay.

Sue Mulvey (:

he got he got invited to an international tournament in London. So of course we had to go see him play. and so he's been wanting me to play for a while. This past July, we actually took like a whole family vacation, like with his wife and daughter and his sisters and their significant others. We all went away and he said, That's it, you're playing fling golf with me. And I was terrible at it, but I loved it.

And so then I don't know if you know this, but in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, there is a golf course called Dum Dum, D-U-M-D-U-M. It is part

Zeke (:

Okay. huh.

Sue Mulvey (:

of the Fuel Park foundation. It's a nine-hole golf course. It's free. You

Zeke (:

Hello.

Sue Mulvey (:

there's no charge to play. You can walk on and play whenever you want. They just ask that you sign in. This is an amazing area. We have there's a lighted pickleball court, a lighted driving range, and then the free golf course. It's stunning and beautiful.

So if you ever get to Mercer County, come check it out.

Zeke (:

Yeah.

Sue Mulvey (:

and so every day I'd go play nine holes, and I just just but sometimes by myself, sometimes my husband will play with me. And I just love it. It's fun and it's fast, and you don't have to have 87 clubs in your bag. You have one stick that it's kind of like the cross between lacrosse and golf. It's one

Zeke (:

Yeah.

Sue Mulvey (:

stick and you throw the ball and it's just way so much fun.

Zeke (:

Yeah, I I was watching YouTube

Sue Mulvey (:

Love it.

Zeke (:

videos about it. I had I just had no idea that this existed.

I read a little bit about it. I guess Fling Golf was invented by Alex Van Allen, who first conceived it as

a child in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He was launching golf

Sue Mulvey (:

There you go

Zeke (:

balls with lacrosse sticks in his backyard. So it fling golf originated in Pennsylvania, which I had no idea.

Sue Mulvey (:

Awesome.

Zeke (:

Yeah.

Sue Mulvey (:

Everything

good comes from Pennsylvania.

Zeke (:

Sue, I wanted to get your reaction to this. I'm sure you heard about it, but Republican state rep Scott Barger stated during a September House committee meeting that he would look for reasons not to hire women of menopause age if legislation protecting workplace accommodations for menopause symptoms became law, such as the ability to sit or take short breaks for water.

Sue Mulvey (:

Well, as a 57-year-old woman, that pisses me off.

Zeke (:

Yeah.

Sue Mulvey (:

I think that's insane. Well, maybe what if we don't hire, you know, 57-year-old men? What would you say to that? Do you know? But

Zeke (:

I

Sue Mulvey (:

yet, but yet our Congress is 70 and 80 years old and they're leading the country. So

Zeke (:

my god.

Sue Mulvey (:

I think that's abhorrent. I think there are, you know, there's women my age that have so much to offer.

I think I think that is a bad thing for him to say, and I think he should lose his job. I think that's

Zeke (:

I

Sue Mulvey (:

sexist and ageist, and I think he should lose his job.

Zeke (:

Yeah, misogyny. It's it's everything. I mean, how can you say that you can't accommodate a woman for that? But they're literally wheeling Mitch McConnell around, you know, Congress in a wheelchair. I mean, like, you know, they'd be happy to wheel in anybody for votes.

Sue Mulvey (:

In a wheelchair. Yeah. Yeah. I still wanna hear I still wanna hear him

talk.

Zeke (:

you know, he's not gonna talk. As long as he shows

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah.

Zeke (:

up to vote and they like raise his hand up on the side, they're gonna be quite happy about that. But yeah, we need people who

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah, I

Zeke (:

are not sexist, misogynists, and ageists elected to office.

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah.

Zeke (:

And I'm glad that you you fit the opposite side of that bill Sue

All right, so we're gonna play unpopular opinion PA edition, okay? I want you to tell me an unpopular opinion

Sue Mulvey (:

no.

Zeke (:

you have about about Pennsylvania. Just something and it can be literally anything.

Sue Mulvey (:

I'm not a Penn State fan.

Zeke (:

no. Sue. Sue. I want you to I want you to win.

Sue Mulvey (:

I know.

Zeke (:

That's hilarious. Okay, what what who do you root for?

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah, I

I I'm a West Virginia fan, so I I

Zeke (:

West Virginia, okay.

Sue Mulvey (:

don't think I I don't think Joe Paul was the greatest coach of all time. I know. Sorry, that's my unpopular opinion. That's my unpopular opinion.

Zeke (:

okay. All right. Well has g has anybody like have you made anybody No, that's

fine. I mean, has it has it gotten you into a lot of trouble and with some conversations in Pennsylvania? Yeah.

Sue Mulvey (:

yes, lots and lots and lots of trouble.

I know. But you know what?

I do have a contingent of pit fans that agree with me. So so like sometimes there you go.

Zeke (:

Okay, all right. Well I just don't want it to cost you any votes, Sue. Okay. I mean I'm I'm the this is gonna this is

gonna be airing, so I don't want you to like lose any votes by November third.

Sue Mulvey (:

There you go. What's your unpopular opinion?

Zeke (:

Okay, so mine is the soft pretzels that you can get in Philly. You know, the ones that are like all connected together like an accordion that they sell at games and everything in the paper bags. I hate them. I I I I

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah. Yeah. Do you

Zeke (:

don't I do not like them at all. And I love soft pretzels. Like I like Auntie Ann's. I like pretzel factory, the nuggets and everything.

Sue Mulvey (:

Uh-huh. Yeah.

Zeke (:

But those like, you know, you see them everywhere and I just can't stand them. I I feel and I'm

Sue Mulvey (:

You know, I was

at a I was at a swap meet in Philadelphia though once and they have donuts on a stick, which I think are amazing. I they're the best ever. But I I've never had one of those pretzels.

Zeke (:

Yeah. Yeah. No, I think there's a lot of great food in Pennsylvania.

Sue Mulvey (:

I'll to try one.

Zeke (:

Yeah, I mean I you may be disappointed, but yeah, I I think I think that's slightly less offensive than your Penn State reference, but I mean I'm not gonna judge you for it. Don't worry about that. I'm the

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah. I think Penn

State's a yeah, yeah, it's it's fine. It's just all my all my siblings are are Penn State alum and

I was the youngest by ten years, so it kind of got shoved down my throat for a

Zeke (:

Mm-hmm.

Sue Mulvey (:

long time. And I'm like, I I'm like, I don't know. Let's get some color in there. Blue and white, like, come on now. Let's get a little color. So yeah, I have

Zeke (:

All right. Absolutely. Yeah.

Sue Mulvey (:

I have gotten I have gotten hit for that quite a bit and gotten slammed by some of my Penn State alum colleagues. But you know what, we

Zeke (:

Mm-hmm.

Sue Mulvey (:

just we we just agree to disagree. How about that?

Zeke (:

Okay.

I I think on that topic that is quite all right. That is quite all right.

Sue Mulvey (:

There

you go.

Zeke (:

Sue, Pennsylvania is ground zero for a measles outbreak, and Republican politicians at the federal and state level continue to spread misinformation about vaccines. What will you

Sue Mulvey (:

Yep.

Zeke (:

do in Harrisburg to address public health issues?

Sue Mulvey (:

Education, education, education, and just keep talking. you know, Pennsylvania is one of a few states, I think 13 left, that still offers a moral exemption that you don't have to have a you don't have to have medical or religious exemption. We have something called a strong moral exemption. And as a school nurse, I see that used quite a bit as somebody that just doesn't want to go out and get the immunization when when we tell them to.

Zeke (:

Yeah.

Sue Mulvey (:

because like I'll look up their immunizations and they have every other one except the one I'm telling them to go get, right? And I'm like,

Zeke (:

Yeah.

Sue Mulvey (:

And a lot of times, because I'm in high school, it's meningitis. And I'm like, can we talk about meningitis just for a minute?

Zeke (:

my god.

Sue Mulvey (:

I know we'll talk about measles in a minute, but this is how meningitis goes. I have a headache. I'm in the morgue. Like that's

Zeke (:

Yes, I I can

Sue Mulvey (:

like

Zeke (:

attest to that, yes.

Sue Mulvey (:

somebody made a

Zeke (:

I agree.

Sue Mulvey (:

reference?

Like, are you telling me that I can't bring peanuts into this classroom because there's one child with peanut allergy, but five kids in this room can get measles and spread it to everybody else? are you kidding me? And I'm like,

Zeke (:

Yeah. I know.

Sue Mulvey (:

I can't make this up.

Zeke (:

I know.

Sue Mulvey (:

I had a student today from I'm not gonna say what hospital, following me and she said, There are two people in the ICU with measles. And that tells me that we are way under reporting.

Zeke (:

Yeah.

Sue Mulvey (:

Because there shouldn't be, I mean, there shouldn't for the numbers that they're telling us, there shouldn't be two people in the ICU. so I think I think they're way under reporting. And I think that we need to vaccinate our children per our doctor's wishes. I

Zeke (:

Yeah. Yeah.

Sue Mulvey (:

I like I'm a nurse and I get it. I I question physicians all the time, right? And I I believe in second opinions. But when the first doctor, the second doctor, the third doctor, and the fourth doctor tell you to get your vaccines, you should probably just go get them.

'Cause they're safe and they're, you know, I I have I have exchange students coming in from other countries around the world and they get more vaccines than we do.

Zeke (:

as a physician, I feel very strongly that vaccines save lives every day. They've saved millions of lives all

Sue Mulvey (:

Every day.

Zeke (:

over every day. And the you know, if you go to PA.gov, they actually have a tracker of how many people in Pennsylvania are getting the measles, and it shows how many have been vaccinated versus unvaccinated. And it's literally less than one percent. Less than one percent of people who are vaccinated get the measles. So vac but this is like

It's like it really is like PTSD for me as a doctor who lived through COVID, who saw Republican politicians in Pennsylvania try everything that they could to keep things open, prevent quarantining, and just allow this virus to spread. Thank goodness we had a Democratic governor. Thank goodness we had someone in the health department who was a Democrat because lives were saved. And we were under reporting the deaths during that time as well. So I mean, this this

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah.

Zeke (:

is j this is real life. This is life and death.

our children shouldn't be pawns in this game. They really shouldn't be. So

Sue Mulvey (:

No, they

shouldn't.

Zeke (:

I I'm glad that you are gonna be on the side

Sue Mulvey (:

I remember the I remember

Zeke (:

of science. I really am.

Zeke Tayler (:

Wow, you're still listening. Thank you so much. I want to make sure as many people in Pennsylvania as possible get to experience The Zekely Podcast. So to help spread the word, please take a moment to rate my podcast. Five stars would be great. Leave a comment as well. And if you're watching this on YouTube, please hit follow. Enjoy the rest of the show.

Zeke (:

Sue, I've been told you love Zatsix Golden Dawn donuts. Is that true? Are they the best in town

Sue Mulvey (:

I do. my God.

Zeke (:

or the best in PA?

Sue Mulvey (:

They're the best in PA, man. They might be the best in the whole world. my God. Yes. You

Zeke (:

Really? Really? I love donuts. Wow. Okay.

Sue Mulvey (:

I'm telling you. I'm telling you. They're the best ever. I stopped there more days than not to get a donut on my way to work. Yeah.

Zeke (:

I'm v okay, so like what's

what's your favorite flavor?

Sue Mulvey (:

just a raised donut, like a yeast donut with chocolate frosting. That's it.

Zeke (:

Chocolate frosting.

Okay.

Sue Mulvey (:

Mm-hmm. Occasionally

Zeke (:

And and do they have like do they have a bunch of different flavors? Like if they have like

a whole bunch? Okay.

Sue Mulvey (:

my god, yeah, they have a ton. They have like cake donuts

and the raised donuts. And now they have they have cronuts that are just there's nothing better than a glazed croissant because like, you know, butter and sugar

Zeke (:

yeah.

Sue Mulvey (:

and my god, just amazing. But yeah,

they're so good and they're fresh and they're warm sometimes. And the ladies

behind the counter are so nice.

Yeah, go to Zatsik Gondon. I I and you know what it's it looks exactly like it did 50 years ago when I used to go in

Zeke (:

Mm.

Sue Mulvey (:

there with my mom with the orange and green or the orange, it's orange and white or green and white, you know, asbestos square tile floors like those old ones, right? my gosh. And it No, no, no, no, no, no, no. Not that. You know, you know the floor tiles, you know what they look like. Yeah.

Zeke (:

my god. You're gonna get them shut down soon. The health the health department's coming out to Zatsix tomorrow. my god. I know. I know what you're saying. I know what you're saying, yeah, yeah.

Sue Mulvey (:

And they still have, let me tell you.

So when I was a kid, it cost a penny to put in the machine and twist the knob and get like the little bouncy ball. So I

Zeke (:

Uh-huh.

Sue Mulvey (:

take my granddaughter in there and it's fifty cents now to do it, but we we we only step we can't step on the orange squares when I take my granddaughter Emerson in. You can't step on the orange squares because that's lava. And then we have to go back and get a donut, and then we put fifty cents in and get the bouncy ball or whatever she wants out of that machine, right? With the that you spin it and it comes out.

Zeke (:

Mm-hmm.

Sue Mulvey (:

And then we go to the lake to the playground.

And we do that every Thursday all summer long.

Zeke (:

That's amazing. I mean, I went so I went on I

Sue Mulvey (:

I know.

Zeke (:

went online and I looked up Zatsix Golden Dawn Donuts and they don't there's no like official website where the it's a standalone page. It's like it's kind of tucked into a grocery store, it seems like. You know, it's like all yeah, yeah, it's like at the grocery store. Yeah, so

Sue Mulvey (:

It is a grocery store, yeah. It's a golden dawn. Yeah.

Zeke (:

like I'm I'm looking this up and it doesn't look that magnificent, but the way that you're selling it, like they should sell their donuts online if you're hearing this Zatsix Golden Don Golden Dawn Donuts owner.

Sue Mulvey (:

They should sell their donuts everywhere.

Zeke (:

Yeah, I mean come on, that these days

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah.

Zeke (:

you can order donuts from Tim Buck too. Why are you not selling these a mi I feel like they're being selfish, Sue. They're being selfish with their donuts.

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah, I know.

It is because you have to go to Kanye Lake to get them and they're wonderful. And I think, yeah,

Zeke (:

All right. Well I'm gonna

Sue Mulvey (:

it's it's the golden dawn in Kanye Lake. They're the best ever.

Zeke (:

next time I'm out in Western Pennsylvania, I'm gonna go there. You you've sold me a hundred percent. I'm going to.

Sue Mulvey (:

You have to. You have to. Absolutely.

Zeke (:

Well, we're gonna play a game

called glazing.

Okay, have you heard have you heard of the term glazing before? It's Gen

Sue Mulvey (:

No.

Zeke (:

Z, Gen Z.

It's giving someone or something excessive praise, usually used as a negative or tease like teasing.

Like you're you're really glazing that person. You're like pouring it on. So I'm gonna

Sue Mulvey (:

yeah.

Zeke (:

g I'm gonna give you some people and I want you to tell me who's glazing who. Okay. how about

Sue Mulvey (:

Okay.

Zeke (:

Stacy Garrety and Donald Trump?

Sue Mulvey (:

sh I don't that's tough. He

Zeke (:

Yeah, right.

Sue Mulvey (:

does praise her a lot. He was praising the last time I saw he was praising her a whole bunch to

Zeke (:

I know.

Sue Mulvey (:

the point where I'm like, I don't know. Do you think

Zeke (:

I know.

Sue Mulvey (:

she glazes him?

Zeke (:

my God. She she flies down to Mar-a-Lago and and the White House all the time just to have an awkward handshake with him. It's it's so embarrassing. It is just so embar for those

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah. Yeah.

Zeke (:

who don't know. I mean her her facial recognition and name recognition is not very good in Pennsylvania, thank goodness. I Josh Shapiro's just gonna steamroll her in the polls. But she's running for govern

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah.

Zeke (:

she's running for governorship. she's the Republican, and she

Sue Mulvey (:

Right. Yeah.

Zeke (:

loves Donald Trump. I mean, just loves him, loves all of his policies, loves the data centers.

Loves the war in Iran, loves the tariffs.

Sue Mulvey (:

Mm.

Zeke (:

Anything that he does, she loves it. And again, I know. And Donald Trump has been having like hundred thousand dollar fundraisers for her in Mar-a-Lago. So yeah, I think they've been glazing each other, but I would say she is more glazing him though. She's putting up much more

Sue Mulvey (:

She's glazing him.

Zeke (:

stuff about

yeah, heavy,

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah.

Zeke (:

heavy, heavy glaze on Donald Trump. Okay, I have a couple more for you.

Sue Mulvey (:

Always.

Zeke (:

Brian Fitzpatrick.

And Speaker of the House Mike Johnson.

Sue Mulvey (:

Brian Fitzpatrick is glazing Mike Johnson.

Zeke (:

Yeah, I mean to be honest, they don't do a lot of it publicly, but you know,

Sue Mulvey (:

Uh-huh.

Zeke (:

Mike Johnson is glazing Fitzpatrick financially all the time. He's cutting him

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah.

Zeke (:

massive, massive checks. I think like six figure checks for campaign finance. I don't know.

Sue Mulvey (:

Where do I find a donor like that? Where where are

are they d use like like one eight hundred donor? Like I wanna know where we find people like that because it's hard.

Zeke (:

I don't know. I don't know.

I don't know. But look, Brian Fitzpatrick is getting bucku bucks. He's getting glazed

hardcore financially from Mike Johnson,

And I really hope that

Sue Mulvey (:

yeah.

Zeke (:

Bob Harvey unseats Brian Fitzpatrick because Brian Fitzpatrick is MAGA. He votes when it counts to get MAGA

Sue Mulvey (:

Yes. Yes. A hundred percent.

Zeke (:

agendas passed. And, you know, control of Congress runs right through Pennsylvania. So, you know, don't it does.

Sue Mulvey (:

It certainly does. It certainly does.

Zeke (:

we gotta stop the financial glazing. Okay, here's the last one.

Sue Mulvey (:

Yes.

Zeke (:

RFK Jr. and Joe Rogan.

Sue Mulvey (:

that's tough.

I say probably Joe

Zeke (:

It's a Yeah, go ahead.

Sue Mulvey (:

Rogan because he's just gross.

Zeke (:

He is really gross. So actually it's kind of flipped. So before Trump,

Sue Mulvey (:

Really?

Zeke (:

yeah, before Trump was elected, Joe Rogan used to glaze RFK Jr. all the time. Bring him onto his podcast and just

Sue Mulvey (:

yeah.

Zeke (:

praise his Maha agenda. But now

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah.

Zeke (:

it's usually just RFK Jr. glazing Joe Rogan. He'll just praise Joe

Sue Mulvey (:

okay.

Zeke (:

Rogan a lot. I look, Joe Rogan is still part of the machine that got us here. And and I

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah.

Zeke (:

I really hate that. And this he's one of the big reasons why I started a podcast, is because I didn't

Sue Mulvey (:

Really?

Zeke (:

I didn't realize

how big podcasts were until

Sue Mulvey (:

Uh-huh.

Zeke (:

after twenty twenty four. I had no idea that there were all these people getting red pilled on shows like Joe Rogan. And so this

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah.

Zeke (:

look I'm not I don't I may never get the kind of following he ever has, but I I do under I do I mean, I

Sue Mulvey (:

You really should though. I think you should.

Zeke (:

do understand well the problem is like he does rage baiting on his show. You know, he'll just see like he he'll bring on people it's like should women be able

Sue Mulvey (:

Always, always. I don't understand that.

Zeke (:

to vote?

Like, let's talk about that today. It's like why the fuck are you talking

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah. Let's talk about that.

Zeke (:

about like whether or not women can vote in twenty twenty six? But you know,

Sue Mulvey (:

Right.

Zeke (:

it's captivating for young people. They think it's funny.

Sue Mulvey (:

well how about

Joel Webb and should women speak in public?

Zeke (:

I know, it's just it's just gross.

All right. No more

Sue Mulvey (:

yeah.

Zeke (:

no more glazing Republican politicians. We

are gonna get some glazed donuts, okay, at Zatskit's

Sue Mulvey (:

Thank you. That absolutely.

Zeke (:

Golden Dawn Donuts.

Sue, as a nurse, what was your reaction

Sue Mulvey (:

Yes.

Zeke (:

to the big bullshit bill and its cuts to Medicaid?

Sue Mulvey (:

I think it's going to destroy rural health care.

Zeke (:

Yeah.

the I think the most heartbreaking part is that the real devastation is gonna start January first, twenty twenty-seven. When the big

Sue Mulvey (:

yeah.

Zeke (:

bullshit

Sue Mulvey (:

Like our

Zeke (:

bill Medicaid

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah.

Zeke (:

cuts happen, that's going to affect three hundred thousand Pennsylvanians. Three hundred thousand Pennsylvanians are at risk of losing their health care because of Republican politicians. And look, I wanna take back Democratic control of Congress more than anyone, you just like the next person. But you better believe that when people are dying at higher rates.

When they're losing their health care, Republicans are gonna just point their fingers back at us and say, Well, the Democrats are in control. Clearly it's their fault. Like they're the ones that passed the bill. Trump signed it into law. So the the

Sue Mulvey (:

clearly. of course. Of course. Of course.

Zeke (:

the optics are gonna be terrible, but the

Sue Mulvey (:

Yep.

Zeke (:

it just shows the callousness of the Republican Party.

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah.

Zeke (:

and and we really need healthcare providers who understand that healthcare is a right. It is a right in this country. You yeah, yeah.

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah. Absolutely. Absolutely. You

know what? I never thought I would live in a healthcare desert. But right now, so Sharon Reginald just ki just closed the last interventional cardiac cath lab in Mercer County. So right now, if you have a heart attack, like so if I'm sitting here right now, you and I are chatting and I'm like, chest pain. I think I'm having a heart attack. 90 minutes until I'm on a cath lab table. Ninety minutes. I'm dead.

Zeke (:

my I mean, yeah,

you're dead. Yeah, you're dead.

Sue Mulvey (:

I'm dead. I'm dead

or I've I've lost a significant amount of heart tissue, right?

Zeke (:

Yeah.

Sue Mulvey (:

I'm dead. There's no interventional cath lab in in Crawford County in Mercer County anymore. Ninety minutes

Zeke (:

This

Sue Mulvey (:

away.

Zeke (:

it's just devastating. And that is why it is even more important for people in your district to elect you as the next state senator. Because with these cuts coming at the federal level, we have to pass legislation at the state level to protect Pennsylvanians. There's money that has to be appropriated

Sue Mulvey (:

Absolutely. Absolutely.

Zeke (:

to keep hospitals open, to give people access to their Medicaid dollars at the state

level.

it's just it's so

important. This moment means something.

Sue Mulvey (:

And people keep keep

people

I do have a plan. Like, you know, we do need first of all, 73% of the corporations that are taking care of the Delaware tax loophole, they need to pay their fair share in taxes. There's

Zeke (:

There you go.

Sue Mulvey (:

other avenues of re

of revenue that we're not using. You know, like the Pesamatic that took out seven billion dollars and paid nothing in taxes, perhaps, you know, legalizing marijuana, things like that.

there are w tons of ways we can get more tax money into the state that we could subsidize rural health care so people living in rural areas like us can go to the hospital and know that we're gonna care, you know,

Zeke (:

Yeah. Yes.

Sue Mulvey (:

and that we don't have to get on a helicopter, which is an eight thousand dollar bill. Who's paying for that? And the thing is,

Zeke (:

We are. We are.

Sue Mulvey (:

is what people don't understand is you know, people will go to the ER. ERs are amazing at what they do. They really super are. They're so good at what they do.

But you know what they're not good at? Treating an earache for a reasonable cost, right? Because that's

Zeke (:

Yeah. Right.

Sue Mulvey (:

just not what they're set up to do. And what's gonna happen is is people are gonna end up at the ER sicker and it's gonna cost more money and they're not gonna have a way to pay. And so who's gonna pay for it?

We all are. Mm-hmm.

Zeke (:

Yeah. We all are. We all are. Yeah.

And that's why we have to meet this moment, elect more Democrats like yourself, so we can turn the ship around.

Sue, what gives you hope?

Sue Mulvey (:

you know what gives me hope, really? Tell you the truth. Gen Z gives me a ton of hope. Not the millennials,

Zeke (:

Interesting.

Sue Mulvey (:

not the boomers. I'm Gen X. I'm Gen X. I'm Gen

Zeke (:

Sue, I'm a millennial. Come on.

Sue Mulvey (:

X, man. I you know what?

I think they've got some great ideas. And I

Zeke (:

Okay.

Sue Mulvey (:

think they are solid and I think we need to nurture them and I think they might save the world.

Zeke (:

Okay. You know, I I am a little offended as a millennial. Okay. I'm I'm busting my ass for Pennsylvania. But but okay, you know, I I know you are. I know you are.

Sue Mulvey (:

I know. I know. Me am too.

Zeke (:

Look, I I am not a discriminator when it comes to what generation you are. If you're in the game with me for Democrats and protecting democracy, we're on the same team. But yeah.

Sue Mulvey (:

Yep. Have you seen that

Gen Z though? They're they're kinda awesome.

Zeke (:

No, they are. They're great. They're great. I I certainly have brought

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah.

Zeke (:

on Gen Z people onto the show. I think they have a lot of great ideas. They're energized. And that's

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah.

Zeke (:

great. Well, again, you give me hope. Okay. Because you're you're

Sue Mulvey (:

well thank you.

Zeke (:

running for a position of power. You're a good person. You will use that power for good things. And

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah.

Zeke (:

and again, I'm gonna say it. I'm I know people are probably annoyed, but I I will never get annoyed saying it. it is hard to not have hope when I see leaders like you in the Democratic Party. People are saying, where where are the leaders in the Democratic Party? I'm talking to one right now.

Sue Mulvey (:

thank you. Thank you. Yes.

Zeke (:

You are a Democrat, you are a leader,

and so I have a lot of hope just by talking to people like you every day.

Sue, my last question for you is what are your plans to get you through these next few years in America?

Sue Mulvey (:

well it depends on what happens on November third. That's gonna be a that's gonna be a hinge moment in my life right there.

Zeke (:

Okay. Yes. Yes, yes.

Sue Mulvey (:

but if I win, I'm planning on doing everything I can in four years to change what a leader in the House legislature looks like. the best bosses I've ever had have had open door policies, and I understand that I can't have a true open door policy because I won't be in every office every day, right?

But on the days I'm there, if you want to come talk to me, you'll be able to talk to me. I will have an open door policy and you'll be able to talk to me. to the Republicans out there, if you vote for me, I promise you I will do everything I can to make you proud of me.

so that's my plan if I win. And my plan if I lose is to continue to inspire kids at school and hopefully be the one, find another one because I I've had one student that just I I she I'm over the moon proud of this young woman who got an academic scholarship to Allegheny College. And you know who gee, you know who I'm talking about if you hear this. I'm overly

proud of this young woman and I think I'll have another one of those and and you know continue to inspire students and hopefully when they look back on their lives, I will be the one that changed it.

Zeke (:

Well, you're doing great work. I and again, maybe play some flingolf in between, you know, all of the things. You could get some

Sue Mulvey (:

There you go. Yeah, there you go.

Zeke (:

decompression, but I hope you get the first track. Okay. I really want to see you in the state senate come November.

Sue Mulvey (:

I do too. I I do too. I'm a very competitive person, so I hate losing. But you know what? I

Zeke (:

huh.

Sue Mulvey (:

do know this is a David Goliath moment.

Zeke (:

Uh-huh.

Sue Mulvey (:

And I've always been a champion for the underdog. So

Zeke (:

Mm-hmm.

Sue Mulvey (:

I want people to be a champion for me. Come out and vote. Every single person has to come out and vote for Sue Malvey and the

Zeke (:

That's right.

Sue Mulvey (:

PA fifty. And you know what? If you like Dave and Goliath and you want to make a little history,

Zeke (:

Mm-hmm.

Sue Mulvey (:

put a Democrat in that seat for the first time ever.

Zeke (:

That's right. Sue Mulvey Democrat running for

Sue Mulvey (:

There you go.

Zeke (:

state senate the trifecta.

Sue Mulvey (:

Yay, can we do it? That'd be great.

Zeke (:

The trifecta, come on, Pennsylvania.

I need I d my birthday present, my holiday presents can all be wrapped into one on November 3rd. Just give me the trifecta, okay? And Sue Mulvey

Sue Mulvey (:

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

Zeke (:

is part of that puzzle. Now, Sue, what is your website?

Sue Mulvey (:

it is Sumalby4pa

Zeke (:

The number four.

Sue Mulvey (:

Senate.com. Yep, number

four. P Sumolv4PA Senate.com. But the best place to find anything that I do is on my Facebook page. It's just Sue Mulvey for Sue Molby for Senate.

Yeah.

Zeke (:

if

you live in Crawford County, Mercer County, or Lawrence County, get off your ass and go

to Sue Mulvey's

Sue Mulvey (:

Please.

Zeke (:

Facebook page or her website, make a small donation, sign up to Door Knock, send a postcard. I don't want to hear that your vote doesn't matter. People are winning seats all over the country, flipping historically red seats, blue, and sometimes they are decided by one vote.

You could be the vote that sends Sue Mulvey to the state senate next year. Sue, I can't vote for you. I wish that I could, but I'm just

Sue Mulvey (:

It's okay.

Zeke (:

so I'm just so grateful that you're running. You're a wonderful person, and I hope that I can call, congratulate you on November.

Sue Mulvey (:

so and if you can't call and congratulate me come on out we'll have a drink and I'll get you a donut absolutely

Zeke (:

And give me a donut. Thank you so much, sir.

Sue Mulvey (:

absolutely you're welcome thank you so much for having patience and getting this done for me I really appreciate it I've had a good time

Zeke (:

Absolutely. Well, thank you so much for joining me here on the Zekely Podcast. Stay hopeful and get involved. And until next time, let's keep building a stronger Pennsylvania together.
