Hello I'm Zeke and welcome to the Zekely podcast. Let's talk
Danny Ceisler (:This
Zeke Tayler (:The guest I have today is a native of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, currently residing in Bristol Borough. He's a decorated veteran, attorney, and currently running to be Bucks County's next sheriff. Thank you so much for being here, Danny Ceisler
Zeke (:For years, I’ve knocked thousands of doors all over Pennsylvania and poured my heart and soul into supporting candidates and causes that make a difference—from local school board races to national elections. The personal is political, and I take every election in Pennsylvania personally.
Where the mainstream media has failed you, I will give you truth and independence. You’ll hear from Democratic leaders, candidates, and change-makers who are working to improve the health of the Commonwealth, and it won’t be boring as hell.
No matter where you are, I’ll meet you with hope and a plan to make your community better one day at a time. Welcome to the Zekely Podcast. Let’s talk Pennsylvania.
Danny Ceisler (:Thank you so much for having me.
Zeke Tayler (:Absolutely. I'm so excited you're here, Danny. I love watching your material online. It's extremely informative and inspirational. So thank you so much.
Well, we're going to learn all about you, your campaign, and have some fun. You ready? All right, so what inspired you to run for sheriff of your town?
Danny Ceisler (:Okay.
Yeah, let's go.
It kind of goes back
my faith, really. And I'm not just saying that. I grew up a Reform Jew, and there's a commandment that really was instilled in us.
is called Tikun Olam which
Zeke Tayler (:Yeah, repair the world.
Danny Ceisler (:translates into repairing a broken world. And that was instilled in us that we have an obligation. My parents told me I have an obligation to
to repair a broken world, not to fix the whole thing, because no one can fix the whole thing.
then we go to the election in:And I saw a sheriff in Bucks County who was doing a lot of things to break the law,
I knew he was an immigration hardliner who was going to partner with ICE to help carry out the president's mass deportation agenda. And I wanted to step up to stop that and not just stop that and,
fix the negatives and the harm. But I've also seen as an attorney how a well-run sheriff's office, an effectively run sheriff's office, can really lift up the vulnerable and make a community a more safe and more just society. And we can get into some of the details on how I would plan to do that. So it was about stopping the bad and really building on the good that the office is capable of.
Zeke Tayler (:Mm-hmm,
that's great. I'm also Jewish, so from one Jew to another, I agree with you. It is certainly our responsibility to try and repair the world, and I'm very grateful you're running for this position, so thank you very much.
you are a co-owner of Naked Brewing Company in Bristol, correct? Okay, so.
Danny Ceisler (:Yep, I thought
about doing this from there. I did. But maybe the sequel episode for the re-election. Yeah.
Zeke Tayler (:man, absolutely. What's the
backstory to the name and how did you get involved?
Danny Ceisler (:Okay, so I came in after the fact. So I wasn't involved in the naming, but it got started on a bad day at work. I'll just leave it at that. A bad day at
Zeke Tayler (:Okay.
Okay.
Danny Ceisler (:I left to work early and I found the only bar that was open and the only bar I could walk home from.
that was open and it was Naked Brewery, which is a brewery and taproom a few blocks from my house.
And while I was there, it was like three o'clock, I was having a beer, I started talking to one of the owners who was there and they had actually had a brawl outside of the bar the other day and they had to make a statement to the police ⁓ and they found out I was an attorney. So I helped them with that.
Zeke Tayler (:Okay.
You
Danny Ceisler (:⁓
And then it turned out they had another legal issue. And so I helped them with that. And over the course of kind of helping them, because the owners at the time are passionate, hardworking. I mean, they're salt of the earth. They know how to brew, which is extremely difficult. They know how to run a restaurant and tap room, is very difficult. But there are a lot of legal
Zeke Tayler (:Uh-huh.
Mm-hmm.
Danny Ceisler (:elements and probably another skill set that was needed. And through that process, they welcomed me, you they offered me to come on board and help. And so there's, there's three of us.
Zeke Tayler (:Mm-hmm.
Danny Ceisler (:one partner takes care of the brewing and runs the brewing operation. One takes care of the tap room And I dot the I's and cross the T's and do less of the fun stuff, but it's still a blast nonetheless.
Zeke Tayler (:Uh-huh.
And you get lots of discounted beer.
Danny Ceisler (:Yes, yes I do. You know,
I earned my keep that way. And it's good stuff.
Zeke Tayler (:That's an amazing story.
I mean, look, I don't frequent Bucks County that often, but I'm definitely gonna have to come by now. And I hope that when I'm there, maybe I'll just run into you, hopefully after a good day this time. I know it started off as a bad day, but hopefully it'll be a good day.
Danny Ceisler (:I'm
Well, let me make this pitch quickly if you're going to come visit. To visit
Zeke Tayler (:Sure, absolutely.
Danny Ceisler (:Bristol Borough, which is a beautiful town right on the water. We have the oldest continuously running bar in America. It's the King George, the second inn. It even predates King George III. ⁓ We have some fantastic restaurants, an excellent theater, a vodka distillery, a whiskey distillery.
Zeke Tayler (:Okay.
Okay.
Danny Ceisler (:and yes, a brewery. So we've got it all. So when you come visit, you can make a whole day at Bristol Brewery.
Zeke Tayler (:I think I'm going to leave the kids at home with a vodka distillery. I'm going to find a babysitter.
Danny Ceisler (:Hahaha!
Zeke Tayler (:I have to admit, I did not really understand the sheriff's job.
you why until I started researching more about them, because I thought that the sheriff was kind of in charge of all the police in a particular area, but that's not really the main job of what they perform. So could you just explain the role of what the sheriff does to the viewers and the listeners?
Danny Ceisler (:So one interesting thing about sheriff's in the United States is they do different things in different ⁓ states every state nearly every state has sheriff's but every state uses them differently and different regions of the country tend to have different models of how to use
In
The sheriffs are the law enforcement for the
and you handle prisoner transportation, but anytime there's a court order, the sheriffs are responsible for making sure that it is
first there are what are called bench warrants. So if somebody doesn't show up to court, if someone is a fugitive from justice,
the judge signs an order that that person has to be brought in and the sheriffs are responsible for finding them and bringing them to justice.
Zeke Tayler (:Mm-hmm.
Danny Ceisler (:Another major example is protection from abuse orders. So that is Pennsylvania's version of a restraining order that is issued in a domestic violence situation. As soon as a protection from abuse order is issued, it is the sheriff's responsibility to take several steps to make sure
that the abused person is protected. If the ⁓ abused person lives with their abusive partner, you have to remove the abusive partner from the home. You have to remove any weapons from that abusive partner if those were involved in the domestic violence. So those are two of kind of the key ways in which the sheriff can keep the community safe. They're also responsible for doing what's called
legal documents. So just say someone doesn't pay their child support. You're responsible for finding that person and making sure they know that they haven't paid their child support and then you bring them to justice if they don't pay for their child support. They're also responsible for issuing gun permits, concealed carry permits. That's another place where a sheriff can make a real difference in that you can either hand them out like candy
Or you can actually perform the legally required checks to ensure that the person who has applied for them deserves that
Zeke Tayler (:Right.
And we're going to talk about
more of that later as well.
Danny Ceisler (:Great.
And then on top of all of that the sheriff has the ability to take on certain strategic initiatives with their manpower and their resources. For example, I'm sure we'll talk about ice plenty of times. ⁓ The guy that I am up against, of his strategic initiatives is the ice partnership.
Zeke Tayler (:yeah, we are.
Danny Ceisler (:So
you really have your resources, your personnel, and your mission. And if you're able to accomplish your mission, anything you want to do on top of that, you can have the ability to take on. So I've certain strategic initiatives that I'm interested in pursuing. And I'm sure we'll have an opportunity to discuss that. So long answer. The Sheriff does a bunch of things, a lot of which are not connected.
Zeke Tayler (:Yeah.
Yeah.
Danny Ceisler (:But when you tie them all together, they are necessary to keep a justice system running, the courts operating, and a community safe.
Zeke Tayler (:It makes a lot of sense that being an attorney will probably help you as the sheriff. You know, I interviewed someone who's a prothonotary and they interface with the court of common pleas a lot and they were also an attorney. So it makes a lot of sense that that would help you as sheriff that you've interfaced in the court systems before because you're going to be essentially carrying out their duties.
Danny Ceisler (:There's this perception, and it's going to be one of the hit pieces on me, that I wasn't a police officer. A sheriff's work in Pennsylvania, even though the uniforms look the same, a sheriff's job and a police officer's job are completely different. And they're different by design.
Zeke Tayler (:Yeah.
Danny Ceisler (:it's not necessary or even particularly helpful to have been a police officer. Whereas what an attorney does, ⁓ attorneys interact with the sheriff's office all the time.
Zeke Tayler (:Right, that would make
Danny Ceisler (:And we've had some of the best sheriffs in Pennsylvania. The best example I'd use is Sean Kilkenny. He's the sheriff of Montgomery County. He's an attorney. He was not a police officer.
Zeke Tayler (:Mm-hmm.
Mm.
Danny Ceisler (:And they hit him so hard, the Republicans did when he flipped that seat. But not only has he been a fantastic sheriff and has been reelected, I believe three times, the Pennsylvania Sheriffs Association, which is about 90 % Republican, elected him to be the president of the organization. So there's just proof right there that being a former police officer is by no means a prerequisite for the job.
Zeke Tayler (:There you go. Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, it seems to me to be the perfect marriage of the two. I totally, as I was researching what sheriffs are in Pennsylvania, I was like, totally makes sense why as an attorney, you would be very good in this position.
Danny Ceisler (:Thank
Zeke Tayler (:right. We're to play another game called what the buck.
Where I'm going to have some trivia questions and you already actually answered one of them. So, and it's the first one. So bucks County is home to one of the oldest.
continuously operating what in America?
Danny Ceisler (:The King George in, old, continuously running in.
Zeke Tayler (:Yep.
Yep, you are correct. What the buck?
Danny Ceisler (:And they have
fantastic crab dip.
Zeke Tayler (:ly. It's been operating since:Danny Ceisler (:And what-
I highly recommend folks visit. That was an easy one. Okay.
Zeke Tayler (:Yeah, okay, the oldest
inn in America, What the
Which bizarre museum in Bucks County lets you explore the world's collection of things like circus sideshow artifacts, and antique taxidermy?
Danny Ceisler (:Is it in Doylestown?
Zeke Tayler (:It is. ⁓
Danny Ceisler (:There's I think I've been there. man, but I'm not I'm not I know there's like a
an oddities museum what?
Zeke Tayler (:Yeah,
it's like the Mütter Museum that's downtown Philadelphia, but this is Bucks County's version of it.
Danny Ceisler (:Okay, give me the answer.
Zeke Tayler (:it's the Mercer Museum. I don't know.
Danny Ceisler (:Okay,
then I've been to a different place that actually somewhat meets the description that you're describing.
Zeke Tayler (:There go. There you
go. Yeah, the Mercer Museum has some, it has 55,000 objects in their collection. What the buck?
Danny Ceisler (:Okay.
What the buck.
Okay, keep them coming.
Zeke Tayler (:All
All right, well I do have one more.
what odd roadside attraction, what's one stood in Bucks County that had people pulling over to stare?
Was it a giant milk bottle, a huge steel dinosaur, a replica of the Liberty Bell made of donuts, or a 20 foot tall fiberglass shoe?
Danny Ceisler (:when I hit a deer and New hope?
issue.
Zeke Tayler (:It was a steel dinosaur by artist Jim
you go.
Danny Ceisler (:All
right, thank you Mr. Gary for lending us your talents
Zeke Tayler (:What the buck?
Danny Ceisler (:What the buck?
Zeke Tayler (:Danny, why are you a Democrat and why do you choose to represent the Democratic party?
Danny Ceisler (:That is an excellent question.
because I believe the Democratic Party has one mission, which is to make people's lives better. And that is the role of government. And I do believe, not in a massive government, but I do believe in government's ability to make people's lives better. I believe in investing in people's healthcare and their education. I believe in a tax system.
that benefits the middle class and growing the middle class instead of the wealthy. I would rather a government that works for 99 % of the people than has those 99 % of the people working for the 1%.
is why I am a Democrat, because I want to have a system of government that works for every American.
Zeke Tayler (:I agree with you. do believe that government works when you have people in government that want to make it work. And I do believe that the Democratic Party is the party that believes in that and can move the ball
Danny Ceisler (:And having served in government in different roles, there are some things that only the government can do. I don't believe in privatization of key government services, working in emergency response and working with some of the most talented, dedicated professionals I have ever seen. This is not something that should be sent off to
Zeke Tayler (:Mm-hmm.
Danny Ceisler (:privatized. see the same thing with outstanding public school teachers, with outstanding doctors and researchers at the National Institute of
great social workers and more medical professionals at the Veterans Administration, at the VA.
Zeke Tayler (:Mm-hmm.
Danny Ceisler (:are things that make us
Zeke Tayler (:Thank you for being a Democrat.
What inspired you to join the army at the age of 18?
Danny Ceisler (:So joining the army first and foremost was really about getting to explore that side of me as a leader.
You know, I think one of the misconceptions about people in the military is they join, everyone joins because they are a patriot who first and
to serve their country. And that's always part of it.
Of course, I was part of it. I came from a military family, but I was really trying to find the best version of myself.
And it worked. mean,
been one of the greatest experiences of my life. I am a
leader because of it. was a better attorney because of it.
think I'm better in every aspect of my life because of the lessons I learned, the struggles I went through, the traumas that I went through, I have grown from. So that is why I joined and I got what I paid for.
Zeke Tayler (:Well, thank you very much for your service.
Danny Ceisler (:Thank you.
Zeke Tayler (:You are an avid CrossFit participant,
Danny Ceisler (:I am. I am. And my knees and joints in general are not ⁓ grateful for it right now, but yes, I am.
Zeke Tayler (:I have to say,
I'm impressed right now. You're standing, aren't you? Are you standing for this entire interview?
Danny Ceisler (:Yes.
Zeke Tayler (:What is this? You're a crazy man.
Danny Ceisler (:yes I am. I'm a big
standing desk guy. that, because then I can do my squats while you're asking questions. You know, I gotta,
I gotta get it in.
Zeke Tayler (:my gosh, I love sitting so
much. I love it. Well, what's your favorite CrossFit challenge?
Danny Ceisler (:it's probably my least favorite when I'm leading up to it. And it's my favorite when I've done it. So every year on Memorial Day, ⁓ CrossFit gyms tend to do an exercise called the Murph in honor of Navy SEAL Lieutenant Murphy, who was killed in combat. And it was his favorite workout. And it is hard.
Zeke Tayler (:Mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm.
Danny Ceisler (:You run a mile, you do 100 pull-ups, you do 200 push-ups, you do 300 squats, and then you run another mile, all with a 20-pound weight fest on. Have you done
Zeke Tayler (:Yeah,
binge watched all the CrossFit games once on Netflix or Amazon or something. And when the Murph Challenge came on, I was feeling pain just watching it.
Danny Ceisler (:Yeah, it is. I mean, it's very difficult. And I would say it's my favorite from like June 1st to the beginning of May and then the month of May where I know it's coming up. It's my least favorite. So I would say the Murph. But it's a good it does. And CrossFit does have a lot of that. You have a lot of memorial workouts because they make you really think about how
Zeke Tayler (:Mm-hmm.
Yeah, yeah, it has a lot of meaning. Yeah.
Danny Ceisler (:not how horrible the workout is, but how lucky you are to be able to do that. And I have served with people who have been seriously injured. I have represented as an attorney people who horrible things have happened to literally in the blink of an eye. One of my best friends from the army, I wasn't with him at the time, but he was in an IED
It messed up his body pretty significantly and it happens in an
So it makes you realize, God, I'm lucky that my body right now allows me to do this. So there's really a feeling of gratitude that comes with those
Zeke Tayler (:Alright, well we're gonna play a game CrossFit or CrossFire. Okay, so I'm gonna give you some terms and you're gonna tell me is it a CrossFit term, law enforcement term, or both. Okay?
Danny Ceisler (:Do you invent these games for every podcast? That is very, very impressive. ⁓
Zeke Tayler (:I do, yes. I do every.
Yeah, I do. Well,
I try and keep people engaged. I got to keep people listening to the Zekely podcast. All right, so Amrap. ⁓
Danny Ceisler (:That is cool, let's play.
That is a ⁓ CrossFit term which means as many reps as possible. It's a style of workout.
Zeke Tayler (:You're off to a good
right, how about stacking?
Danny Ceisler (:⁓ Stacking, so that's it definitely can be a fitness and nutrition concept. When it's in a fitness concept, it's layering workouts or sets on top of each other and then the nutrition context, which often overlaps with fitness, you have a stack, which is the supplements that you take. ⁓ But I'm interested to see if there's a law enforcement expression as well.
Zeke Tayler (:Yep.
Base what I could find, it's a police tactic for entering a building. Have you ever heard of that stacking? Yeah.
Danny Ceisler (:sure.
yes, we would do them the military as well.
Zeke Tayler (:Mm-hmm.
Danny Ceisler (:four people outside the door. You go in, one person opens the door, person two comes in, you have ⁓ they are responsible for a corner, person three goes in, they're responsible for a corner person.
I'm familiar with the
Zeke Tayler (:Okay, that one
right. How about
Danny Ceisler (:You
Zeke Tayler (:how about the gauntlet?
Danny Ceisler (:That sounds like it could be a specific CrossFit workout. It also sounds like a military expression. I think the gauntlet is the end
Zeke Tayler (:Mm-hmm.
Danny Ceisler (:training
Okay.
Zeke Tayler (:Yeah, you're
right. You're right about the counts. Yeah, it could be a workout and a dangerous corridor or a very, you know, intense military exercise. right. All right. Here's the last one. Fran.
Danny Ceisler (:Fran is a CrossFit workout.
Zeke Tayler (:Yes, could you explain what that is?
Danny Ceisler (:don't remember exactly. So there's two types of named CrossFit workouts. There's ⁓ Memorial workouts, and then there's workouts that typically have a woman's
Zeke Tayler (:Mm-hmm.
I guess there are no bad workouts in CrossFit. Because you all enjoy suffering so much.
Danny Ceisler (:⁓
Fran
21, 15, nine reps of thrusters and pull ups. A thruster is you have a barbell. So imagine something you'd bench press. You have that in this position and you do a squat with it and then you lift it overhead. And you would do that 21 times and then you do 21 pull ups.
Zeke Tayler (:Okay.
Mm-hmm.
Danny Ceisler (:And that would be a Fran
Zeke Tayler (:What
did Fran do to be punished with the... Seriously. Wow. I don't think I'll be doing a Fran anytime soon.
Danny Ceisler (:Fran probably broke someone's heart would be my guess.
Zeke Tayler (:The current sheriff decided a couple of months ago he wanted to use a dozen deputies to help assist ICE agents essentially harass and kidnap undocumented immigrants. And now the ACLU, I think, is suing to prevent this from occurring.
But as sheriff, I'm assuming you wouldn't be wasting
time doing this type of activity.
Danny Ceisler (:Yeah, well, I mean, I wouldn't be wasting,
the ACLU's time. I care about my deputies' time because my deputies' time really belongs to the people of Bucks
there's a lot of problems with this program, a lot of them. But one of them is sheriff's deputies have a job. And we talked about some of those responsibilities. None of them are immigration
And you know, by the way, it's been more than a few months that this sheriff tried to do this program during Trump's first administration, when he was a local police
He pins the whole drug crisis in the United States on illegals and
You know, it's just not factually accurate and it's not how we can make our community safer and is an absolute waste of our taxpayers resources and our deputies time. So look, on day one, I would withdraw from the program and that's not even really a close call.
Zeke Tayler (:Yeah, it's just terrible that he's doing it's terrible that anyone would do this, you know in their town, but he's just not letting it go. saw recently on social media he was being recorded saying that he's excited and giddy about it. You know, deputizing people to go after undocumented immigrants in Bucks County. It's like you have nothing better to do.
Danny Ceisler (:he has tripled down on it. And it is not popular because people are seeing what's going on around the
I don't think the sheriff's office really has any role in immigration. So while it's a shame that the current sheriff has pursued this, that's that is not the role that I would seek to play at all. I would want to make every member of our community feel safe, except for maybe violent criminals. You know, but but aside from that, look, yeah, I don't I don't want to round up
Zeke Tayler (:Excellent.
Danny Ceisler (:cooks and maids and gardeners, ⁓ I want to round up domestic abusers and people who are fugitives from justice.
Zeke Tayler (:I'm very grateful that you will not participate in that heinous idea.
Danny Ceisler (:And this race is really,
about more than just doing that in Bucks
this is a symbolic race. Bucks County
rump was here a ton. Biden in:This is a county people are watching and it is a 50-50 county. And so you have a sheriff here who has put himself out there for Trump. He endorsed him early. He is backing his deportation agenda. And the question is, will he be rewarded for that with another term or will voters stand up and say, this is unacceptable and we're going in a different direction? And elected law enforcement officials all over the country are going to look at this race this year.
Zeke Tayler (:Yeah.
Danny Ceisler (:and they're going to see what ends up happening to the sheriff who decided to dedicate his deputies to advancing the mass deportation agenda.
Zeke Tayler (:I you you send them packing.
Danny Ceisler (:We're working on it. We're working very hard on it.
Zeke Tayler (:I know you are.
I've discovered that you are a certified barbecue competition judge.
Danny Ceisler (:Yes, I
Zeke Tayler (:first of all, as an avid barbecuer, consumer, and cooker, how did you attain such a certification?
Danny Ceisler (:It is an eight hour course put on by the Kansas City Barbecue Society, which is America's largest barbecue competition circuit. They have competitions all over America. This is like the major leagues
Zeke Tayler (:Really?
Danny Ceisler (:barbecue societies. And they have an eight hour course where you learn how to judge. And then you go out and you have to apply to judge places because it's actually very competitive to be able to judge because you get to have a bunch of free
amazing barbecue. So I've judged a number of times and I'm an avid barbecuer myself.
Zeke Tayler (:I'm floored right now. This is real. This could be me. I could join you and we could go eat tons of barbecue and judge. This could be a thing we could do together.
Danny Ceisler (:⁓
yeah, ask me anything about prohibited garnishes like I I know I I know the rules ⁓ and And so actually making another Bucks County pitch here. I did it through a place called smoking dudes barbecue in Ben Salem, which Ben Salem, which is a town one of the largest towns in Bucks County one of the region's best competition
Zeke Tayler (:my god.
You
huh.
Okay.
Danny Ceisler (:barbecue supply stores.
first off outstanding meats, smokers, every different smoking wood you could be interested in. I like to experiment with different wood combinations. So, you know, whether you need cherry, apple, oak, hickory, ⁓ mesquite, pecan, whatever you need, have all different sorts of charcoal.
Zeke Tayler (:Yeah.
Danny Ceisler (:a bajillion seasonings and sauces. So it's every accessory and tool you could need. I have never once gone there and gotten just what I came for.
Zeke Tayler (:It's like the target of barbecue stores. Nobody goes into Target and just buys one thing. They come out with ton of stuff. I am going to Google this, and I want to join your ranks as a certified barbecue judge. Because I don't have a lot of hobbies, and this, I want to do this now. I'm going to Google this later. We're going to make it happen.
Danny Ceisler (:no discipline there.
Please do.
Zeke Tayler (:le gun permit unit program in:Danny Ceisler (:Well, I want to be clear on one thing. As the sheriff, you know, it's not my job to stand in the way of law-abiding citizens who would pass all of the requisite checks that should be performed. My issue is not in the convenience. My issue is with the process. ⁓ And when you're doing a mobile permitting system and you're just, you know, okay, you're here, boom, boom, boom.
Zeke Tayler (:Right.
Okay.
Yeah.
Danny Ceisler (:⁓
You are supposed to submit two references. You're supposed to ⁓ follow up on those references. And when the sheriffs claim we don't have the manpower to do these necessary checks, well, that person who's in the gun unit, who's driving out on overtime on a Saturday you know, to hand out gun permits to everybody, that person could be spending their time performing the checks. I will tell you, I have a concealed carry permit and nobody called my references.
Zeke Tayler (:Mm-hmm.
Danny Ceisler (:I know personally and for a fact that the requisite checks were not performed. So while it is not my job to stand in the way
exercising the Second Amendment rights, would be my duty to protect the citizens of Bucks County to make sure domestic abusers, people with violent felonies, people suffering from certain mental illnesses are not given weapons.
that could enable them to cause catastrophic harm to our community.
Zeke Tayler (:Well, thank you for doing that because again, I also believe that people should be able to own firearms if they want to, not any type of firearm, obviously, but a responsible gun owner is totally fine with me, but they shouldn't be handing them out like candy. And I feel like the current sheriff doesn't care a lot about policy when it comes to this stuff. So I would really be appreciative when you become sheriff that you will bring that type of tempo to the office.
Danny Ceisler (:Sure.
I owe a duty not just to potential gun owners, but I would owe a duty to the community that those gun owners would be carrying in.
Zeke Tayler (:I agree.
In:Josh Shapiro's administration as a senior public safety official. What were some of your accomplishments in that role?
Danny Ceisler (:So that was a fun
my role was to spearhead strategic initiatives to improve public safety in Pennsylvania.
one that I was really proud of, because it really started in Bristol and in Bucks County because of the flood that happened here, was building a brand new grant program for disaster survivors.
Zeke Tayler (:Okay.
Danny Ceisler (:So
taking a step back, there's something called a ⁓ presidential disaster declaration. You might hear like the president declared a disaster. And what that means is there's a disaster of such significance that the president authorizes funds to be distributed to help people direct.
which means that disaster survivors can get a grant of tens of thousands of dollars from FEMA to help them rebuild their lives. But for there to be a presidential disaster declaration has to be a major massive
what happens in Pennsylvania is we have these disasters there outside of flood zones and I'll tell you why that's significant a second.
but they don't rise to the level of a presidential disaster declaration. So there's no federal money coming
Home insurance doesn't cover flooding typically, and flood insurance is really expensive. And if you live outside of a flood zone, you probably don't have flood insurance. So if there's a flood, you're outside of a flood zone, you don't have flood insurance.
You are screwed. I mean, you are in a horrible situation where your home is gone, but you don't have any, you know, recompense for it. There's no insurance for it.
Zeke Tayler (:Yeah.
Danny Ceisler (:And so the legislature put ⁓ five million dollars a year in a pot and basically said this is for disaster survivors in Pennsylvania when there's no presidential disaster declaration. But
Zeke Tayler (:Okay.
Danny Ceisler (:You can't just put $5 million in a
Distribute it is a massive endeavor. You have to have all sorts of guidelines, criteria, administration, personnel. A lot goes into this grant program. So I was tasked and I got a team in building this grant program from scratch, determining how big are the awards going to be? Who gets it? What are the qualifications? What are the covered categories? What are the checks? How do we prevent fraud and
Zeke Tayler (:Mm-hmm.
Danny Ceisler (:And it takes a lot longer to build something like this than you would think, but we built it from scratch and to be able to start giving people money to help them rebuild their lives was incredible.
Zeke Tayler (:Mm-hmm.
Danny, it sounds like you got some shit done with Governor Shapiro.
Danny Ceisler (:That was the goal and I learned a tremendous amount about governing from Governor Shapiro because you say get shit done, but that's not just the public motto. mean, that's behind closed doors what the entire team was striving to do.
Zeke Tayler (:Yeah.
would you motivate someone?
to get involved in not just your race for sheriff but for all the positions on the ballot this November 4th it.
Danny Ceisler (:So for people who are listening to this podcast, who are probably seeing what's going on in Washington and you are devastated, you're seeing what's going with women's rights, with ICE, with Ukraine, there's only so much power we have over those
Your school board, your township supervisors, your Supreme Court justice, you know, retention races. This is what we have control over now. This is what we can do this year.
are the actions we can take. And for what it's worth, who's, if you have kids,
Who's on your school board is probably going to affect your life more than who your senators, your township supervisor who controls when your garbage gets picked up, you know, whether the stop sign gets put in, you know, where it needs to be. This is what impacts your daily life. So let's not get devastated. Let's be motivated. And every win we get this year turning Bucks
Zeke Tayler (:Right? Right?
Danny Ceisler (:going to lay the groundwork to take the house back in 26.
that lays the groundwork for:Zeke Tayler (:You're right.
Danny Ceisler (:the fight this year.
Zeke Tayler (:Absolutely, 90 % of your life is affected by local politics, but 90 % of people don't know who their local politicians are. And it really is important to get involved in every election. There are two elections every year in Pennsylvania. Every single year, there are two elections, the primary and the general election. And as I always say, every election is the most important election.
you hope?
Danny Ceisler (:young people beginning to get involved in politics. Yeah, I maybe this is ⁓ a just of me. But I have seen, you know, the American political system, I feel like in in decline and really devastated by gridlock. And we have these existential threats really to our country. mean, income inequality, unregulated artificial intelligence, climate
and political system and leaders, unable to confront these issues. I believe my generation, younger generations feel the gravity, the urgency to confront these issues. And we're seeing more and more young people stepping into leadership, my generation stepping up. Anything I'm able to do ever to encourage, support, recruit, mentor.
The next generation to step up in the leadership, that is what gives me hope that we're in a dark time, but we're going to figure it out. And I think it's not going to be Chuck Grassley's, the 90 year old senators of the world. It's going to be younger people who feel compelled to work together to resolve these existential threats.
Zeke Tayler (:Well, you running for this position gives me hope. So thank you for that.
Danny Ceisler (:Well, thank you.
Zeke Tayler (:And my last question for you is, what plans do you have to get yourself through these next few years?
Danny Ceisler (:For the next few years? like the presidential. ⁓
Zeke Tayler (:Mm-hmm.
I mean that's
kind of what I'm hinting at, but yeah, you know, there's a lot of stuff going on in this country and what are you doing? How do you keep your head right?
Danny Ceisler (:Exactly what I'm doing right now, which is taking action. ⁓ Yeah, I heard somewhere that the cure for anxiety is action. ⁓ So for me,
Zeke Tayler (:Mm-hmm. Yes.
Mm-hmm.
Danny Ceisler (:running, it is making this difference.
It's taking control of what I am able to take control of.
And then it's also having other outlets, working out, cooking.
you know playing baseball i don't think it's healthy ⁓ and no offense to anyone who this applies to to make politics your you know your entire life you gotta tune out every once in a while you can't tune out entirely but you can take a sunday afternoon off and smoke a copa roast or or do whatever it is that you need to do
Zeke Tayler (:Yeah. ⁓
Danny Ceisler (:So, you know, it's finding that balance, but it's staying in the fight ⁓ more than anything.
Zeke Tayler (:Yeah.
Yeah. I need to find more of that balance, Danny. I got to admit, I feel like ever since the election, I've been in it pretty deep. So I need to come over and do some grilling with you. OK, we're going to we're going to make a date.
Danny Ceisler (:I
would love to have you come visit Bristol. I think we've basically made these plans already. We'll get a beer. Well, so the order, you got to throw the meat on and then the beer and then you check on it. And then sometimes you put a little beer in a spray can and spritz the meat to keep it moist.
Zeke Tayler (:Yeah. Okay. yes.
Mm-hmm.
Danny Ceisler (:anyway, yeah, it sounds like a great plan. I'd love to do that sometime.
Zeke Tayler (:It's a date.
Well, Danny Ceisler running for Bucks County Sheriff, will be on the ballot this November 4th. I can't vote for you. I wish I could, but I can't. How can people help your campaign?
Danny Ceisler (:Come to Bucks County. We would love to have you knock doors, write postcards. And then, these things cost money. So if you're not someone who wants to come to Bucks County, this is already the most expensive sheriff's race in Pennsylvania history.
Zeke Tayler (:Mm-hmm.
Danny Ceisler (:⁓ So to make it go on my website, make a contribution to the campaign to help us not just tell people about me, but to let them know there is an election this year. ⁓ And if you want to, if you are seeing what's going on with ICE and you are furious about it, we can send a message to the country that incumbents who voluntarily aid and abet these policies will be punished at the polls and not rewarded by it. Because think about the message that it will send if Fred Harran wins.
Zeke Tayler (:Yeah.
Yes.
Mm-hmm.
See ya.
Danny Ceisler (:it will show that he was rewarded for taking this position. So if you can make a contribution, it really, it goes to getting people to vote. That is what we use it for. So those are a few ways you can help. And if you're interested in volunteering, you can also go to my website, dannyceisler.com, just fill it in and we'll be in touch real soon.
Zeke Tayler (:Mm-hmm. Yeah. We have to get out the vote.
Perfect. I'll be sure to promote your website as well.
Danny Ceisler (:Thank you so much and thank you for having me. This was a lot of
Zeke Tayler (:We had a great time and I am just so grateful that you're running. I'm grateful for your values and Bucks County will be lucky to have you as their next sheriff.
Danny Ceisler (:Thank you so much, Zeke. It means the world.
Zeke Tayler (:Absolutely.
Well, thank you so much for joining me here on The Zekely Podcast. Stay hopeful and get involved. And until next time, let's keep building a stronger Pennsylvania together.
