Rachel Cuevas: A Community-First Vision for Pennsylvania

Rachel Cuevas is running for State Representative in Pennsylvania with a message shaped by family, work, and community: government should help people remove barriers and solve practical problems. On The Zekely Podcast, Cuevas spoke about supporting veterans, raising wages, funding public schools, protecting access to health care, and planning development responsibly. Her background in a military family and human resources informs how she approaches those issues – and why she says she is ready to serve.

A Commitment to Public Service

Cuevas’ interest in public service grew from experiences close to home. Her father served in the Army, her mother in the Air Force, and her husband’s family also has military roots. She described seeing how difficult it could be for a veteran to translate specialized military experience into civilian employment. That experience helped shape her focus on veterans’ employment and support. Cuevas said military service builds valuable skills, including leadership, adaptability, and decision-making under pressure. She wants employers to recognize those strengths and believes public services should help veterans access jobs, housing, health care, and mental-health support. Her human-resources experience also informs her approach. She sees a connection between HR and public service: both involve listening, connecting people to resources, and addressing problems fairly.

Raising Wages and Easing the Cost of Living

Cuevas argued that low wages make it increasingly difficult for families to cover essentials. She supports raising Pennsylvania’s minimum wage, saying that current pay does not reflect the cost of housing, groceries, transportation, and other needs.

She described affordability as more than a numbers issue. When people cannot meet basic expenses, families face stress and communities lose economic stability. Cuevas said she hears concerns about pay and the cost of living while speaking with residents, and she believes workers deserve wages that keep pace with everyday costs. Her focus on working families also shapes her views on education. Cuevas supports greater state investment in public schools, arguing that underfunding can shift financial pressure onto local communities and property taxpayers. She sees strong schools, career training, and apprenticeships as part of building opportunity for students and a skilled workforce.

Health Care, Safety, and Community Well-Being

Cuevas emphasized access to health care and the importance of protecting people from avoidable harm. She discussed coverage, the cost of medication, vaccination, and the need to follow science in public-health decisions. She also spoke about workplace harassment, drawing on her HR experience. In her view, clear protections and safe environments matter at work just as they do in the wider community. On gun policy, Cuevas said she supports constitutional rights while backing restrictions she considers necessary for public safety. She pointed to school safety and the wellbeing of children as reasons to take community concerns seriously.

Responsible Growth and Civic Engagement

Cuevas raised questions about the environmental and infrastructure effects of large development projects, including data centers. She supports economic growth, but said communities should understand a project’s demands on energy, water, and local resources before it moves forward. For her, development should be planned with residents and the long-term health of the region in mind. Across the conversation, Cuevas returned to civic engagement. She urged people to vote, stay involved, and speak with their representatives about local needs. Her central argument is that participation matters: communities can shape decisions when people make their concerns heard. Cuevas’ platform connects veteran support, wages, schools, health care, safety, and development through one idea: public policy should make life more secure and opportunity more accessible for Pennsylvania families.
